Americorps volunteer joins literacy council
Friday, October 8, 2010

Jonathan Wiley, an AmeriCorps Volunteers in Service to America member, has joined the staff of the Literacy Council of Sumner County.

Wiley will work on fundraising and grant writing efforts at the nonprofit, as well as reaching out to the community and developing the agency’s volunteer program.

He is a native of Chattanooga, Tenn., holds a Bachelor of Science degree in International Relations from Middle Tennessee State University, and plans to attend graduate school when his service with the literacy council is complete.

Wiley is only the second VISTA member the Literacy Council of Sumner County has taken on.

VISTA is a national service program founded in 1965 to combat poverty. In 1993, VISTA was incorporated into AmeriCorps, a federal program with the mission of improving lives and fostering civic engagement through service. Members of VISTA commit to serve full-time for a year at a local nonprofit organization or local government agency, working to build the organization’s capacity to operate.

The Literacy Council of Sumner County looks to improve the community by providing a nonprofit, comprehensive learning center for all ages that focuses on individual academic needs.

It is located at 260 West Main St. in the City Square Shopping Center in Hendersonville. For more information about the literacy council’s programs or for upcoming event information, go to the Web site at www.literacysumner.org or call 822-8112.
