Arthur Fredrick Briner
age 74, of Hendersonville, passed away on February 5, 2012. Mr. Briner was born in Napoleon, Ohio in 1937. His father, John Briner, his mother Margaret Lause and brother Bill Briner precede him in death. He served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1961. He was retired as an airline pilot having flown with US Airways for 32 years. He is survived by his wife, Luetta Sue Briner, to whom he was married for 55 years, and his two sons, Steve Briner, Robert Briner, along with his six grandchildren, Brent Medley, Garren Medley, Matthew Medley, Grace Briner Rockstroh, Rebekah Briner, Hannah Briner. He also survived by sisters, Lorraine Burkey, Mary Ann Briner, Kay Ann Whitaker, and brothers Louis Briner and Leo Briner. Services are private. Martha J. Hardison
age 66, of Springfield, passed away Thursday, February 2, 2012. Johnny Odell Brown, Sr.
age 69, of Gallatin, passed away Friday, February 3, 2012. His cremains will be interred at a later date in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. He was born in Nashville, on October 9, 1942, son of the late Homer and Esterlee Baggett Brown. He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlene Green Brown and a sister, Ann Hutchinson and a brother, Charles Brown. He is survived by two sons, Steven Brown and Johnny Brown, Jr., both of Hendersonville; one sister, Betty Witman (Jack) of Donelson; one aunt, Rose Baxter (George) of White House and two grandchildren Zachary and Jacob. Mr. Brown was a Respiratory Therapist, working at Sumner Regional Medical Center, University Medical Center and Vanderbilt Hospital during his career. age 88, of Gallatin, passed away Friday, February 3, 2012. Jeweldine McPeak

Frank “Richard” Rivers Sr.,
age 66, formerly of Gallatin, passed away on January 8, 2012, in Wisconsin. Mr. Rivers was born February 26, 1945 in Gallatin. He proudly served in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany during the Vietnam Era. Frank was a licensed barber. He enjoyed writing and was a wonderful artist, as well as an accomplished musician. His interests included playing the guitar, softball, Sudoku, and Scrabble. Frank was an avid sports enthusiast and exemplary gardener. He was a very creative individual and a man of strong faith. His faith endured throughout the season of cancer that eventually took him from us. Survivors include his daughters, Serita Summers and Brenda Williams, of Tennessee and Ellen Brown of Utah; a son, Frank “Ricky” Rivers Jr., of Florida; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother, Thomas “David” Rivers, of Louisiana and a sister, Dean Rivers of Tennessee. Frank is further survived by many friends, including special friends, Cliff and Jo Kutzner. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jewel Francis (nee Brown) and Leeander Richard Rivers. Helen Pauline Bates Baber
age 100, of Gallatin, passed away Friday, January 6, 2012. Funeral service is today, Wednesday, January 11 at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church with Reverend Kyle Gott and Dr. Charles Moffatt officiating. Interment follows in Crestview Memorial Park with Bill Baber, Britt Bassoni, Andrew Hogan, Billy Kirklin, Todd M. LaPorte, Shaun Potter, Ben Spears, and Martin Spears serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be E. H. Garrott, Jr., John Garrott, Tommy Garrott, Mary Bell Neal Ginanni, Pat Hibbett, Paul Neal, Tom Neal, Nancy Parsons, Gay Shields, John Shields, and Kenneth Thomson. Mrs. Baber was born August 2, 1911, in Sumner County near Castalian Springs, the daughter of Hugh Britton Bates and Nettie Clay Talbot Bates. She was the widow of Marion Mason Baber whom she married in 1930. A member of Gallatin's First Presbyterian Church, she left a legacy of faithful service there. She particularly enjoyed delivering the church-sponsored Meals on Wheels for 31 years. "Miss Helen" volunteered for over 30 years at Sumner Regional Medical Center, accumulating almost 5,000 hours of service. For 39 years, she was employed at Randy's Record Shop, owned by Randolph C. Wood. Earlier she had partnered in Gallatin Printing Company with her brother William Russell Bates. As a young lady, she secured her first employment with the Sumner County Board of Education in the Howard School Cafeteria. She was a descendant of the early families of Sumner and Wilson Counties, including Bates, Britton, Cole, Walters, Baker, Blakemore, Mathes and Connell. In Kentucky, the Talbot, Speed, Owsley, Clay and Lewis families. In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her six siblings, Mary Catherine Oglesby, Talbot Bates, Hugh W. Bates, Charles H. Bates, Sadie Bates, and William Russell Bates. She is survived by her daughters, Betty B. Laporte (Todd) of Lafayette, California and Polly B. Bassoni of Portland; four grandchildren, four great grandchildren and her beloved niece, Anita Hogan, of Brentwood. age 90, of Gallatin, passed away Wednesday, December 28, 2011. Funeral service was Saturday, December 31 at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Family Heritage Funeral Home with Brother Jonathan England officiating. Interment followed in Crestview Memorial Park with Glenn Haynes, Barry Goldsmith, Jeff Conyer, Tommy Franklin, Jim Johnson and Steve Tucker serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Elders and Deacons at Bushs Chapel Church of Christ. Mrs. Franklin was born January 26, 1921 in Sumner County, daughter of the late Ira and Frances Durham Taylor. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by grandson, Mark Franklin; brothers, Gordon Taylor and Harold Taylor and sister, Margaret Johnson. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Sumner A. “Chuck” Franklin of Gallatin; son, Thomas S. Franklin (Patsy) of Chattanooga; brothers, Kenneth Taylor (Mary Frances) and Joe Taylor (Virginia) of Gallatin; sisters, Catherine Haynes of Gallatin, Callie Long of Michigan, Carolyn Goldsmith of Upton, KY and Delores Lopaze (Jim) of Elgin, TX; granddaughter, Joy Hiett (Jason) of Cleveland, OH and great grandchildren Ellis Hiett and Sumner Hiett. Visitation is today, Wednesday, January 4 from 4-7 p.m. Mr. Betancourt was born November 20, 1926 in New York, NY, son of the late Manuel Betancourt and Josephine Rivera Betancourt. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his daughter, Debra Betancourt; sister, Amparo Betancourt and brother, Theodore E. Betancourt. He is survived by his wife, Marie Spivey Betancourt of Gallatin; sons, Daniel Betancourt (Sandy) of New Jersey and Philip C. Betancourt (Heather) of Sarasota, FL; brothers, Charlie Betancourt (Carman) and James Betancourt (Josie) all of New York, NY; sisters, Isabel Aviles of Delaware and Helen Rios of New York, NY; sister-in-law, Aida Betancourt of New Jersey and grandchildren, Jonathan Betancourt, Matthew Betancourt, Scott Betancourt, Amber Betancourt and David Betancourt. Mr. Betancourt served during WWII in the U. S. Navy and then later joined the U. S. Army, where he retired after 22 years as a SFC.
