Station Camp and Beech football team’s may have taken different route’s to get to the second round of the state tournament playoffs, but their paths cross Friday night, and the winner will make it to the quarterfinals, just three games from being crowned champions of the 5-A division.
“Station Camp is a very dangerous team because they have so many weapons on both sides of the ball,” said Beech Coach Anthony Crabtree. “They try to play physical throughout the game, but they also have those big play guys that can stretch the field, and have the ability to score on just one play. “Antioch may have taken them lightly last week because they did come in with the number eight seed, but I can promise you we’re not doing that. We know how good they are, and what they’re capable of, so hopefully we’ll be prepared for whatever they throw at us.” Station Camp Coach Shaun Hollinsworth also had high praise for Beech’s squad. “Anytime we take on Beech there’s one thing we know for sure, we know it’s going to be a battle for the full 48 minutes,” said Hollinsworth. “Beech has made some changes since we played them the first time, and I’d like to think that we’ve also gotten better, so this is going to be a totally different game than the one anyone saw earlier in the season. “We’ve told our guys that making it to the playoffs gives us a chance to right some wrongs, and this is going to be the first week we can actually do that. I know it’s not going to be easy, but accomplishing something that you want badly is never easy.” Station Camp still operates out of its Wing T on offense, and runs a 5-0 defense according to Crabtree. “I know I said it before, but I can’t stress enough how talented Station Camp is, especially on the offensive side of the ball,” said Crabtree. “(DeMarquis Johnson) does a great job running the ball, and they have (Josh Malone) for the deep threat, and (Jeremy Pickel) catches those hard throws across the middle.” They have good lines on both sides of the ball, and they have some headhunters in the linebacker squad, and in the defensive backfield, so we’re going to have to be on top of our game Friday night.” Hollinsworth said that Beech has gone to more of an I formation on the offensive end, and now runs a 4-4 stack on the defensive end. “The last couple of weeks Beech has been operating out of an I formation instead of the Wing T they primarily ran against us the last time they were here, so we’re going to have to prepare for both,” said Hollinsworth. “Defensively, they have gone from an odd front to the 4-4 stack to take advantage of those athletic linebackers. “We’re going to have to keep an eye on (Dorian Carter) and (Jalen Hurd) because if they get into the open field they could be gone before we can think twice. We know they are going to get some yards; we just have to keep them from going nuts. I think Hendersonville did the best job against them this year, so we’re going to look at what they did and try and use a version of that.” Both coaches expressed the importance of getting out to an early lead, and being able to keep it close until the fourth quarter. “I think we really need to get an early lead so we can force the action, but if something happens and we do fall behind then we’re not going to panic because we’ve been there so many time this season. “Our guys know what we’re capable of, so there won’t be any panic from our sideline. We know it’s not going to be flashy out there, but it’s going to be intense, physical, and a game that neither will give on until the end of the game.” Crabtree agreed saying, “This is going to be one of those games where it’s probably going to come down to a mistake or two. It will either be a blown assignment, or some type of mental mistake that causes a turnover, and that could easily be the difference in the game. “We’re going to have to pay attention each and every snap and play assignment football because this game will turn on just one mistake.” Kickoff for Friday night’s game will be at 7 p.m. at Shackle Island Field at Beech. by Chris Lynn |
