Five Sumner County players are competing in the two-day qualifier for the three spots that advance to the U.S. Junior Amateur at The Golf Club of New England in Stratham, N.H., July 16-21. Hendersonville’s Kevin Lee shot a 1-over 73. Gallatin’s Austin Swafford shot a 6-over 78. Pope John Paul II’s Connor McCarthy shot a 4-over 76. Hendersonville’s Landon Albert shot an 8-over 80. JPII’s Carson Riley shot a 19-over 91. Brooks Thomas is the leader a 4-under 68. Danny Gleeson and Poom Pattaropong are tied for second at 1-under 71. Arunja Anday and David Logan Watkins are tied for fourth after an even-par 72. Lee is tied with four others after their 73 among the 67-player field. On Wednesday, Riley tees off at 7 a.m., Albert at 8:12, Swafford at 8:39, McCarthy at 9:06 and Lee at 9:51. On the girls’ side, Gallatin’s Cori Burns, Beech’s Abbie Gregory and JPII’s Christina Lindahl all played in a one-day qualifier at Old Fort for the U.S. Girls’ Junior Amateur. The top five advance to the tournament held at Lake Merced Golf Club in Daily City, Calif., July 16-21.
Burns shot a 13-over 85 to tie for 23rd and Lindahl shot a 26-over 96 to tie for 31st. Elisabeth Bernabe of Anaheim Hills, Calif., won the qualifier with a 1-under 71. MURFREESBORO – Day One of the USGA Junior Amateur qualifier at Old Fort Golf Club is in the books for the boys.
Gregory, last year’s TSSAA runner-up, came the closest. The senior shot a 7-over 79 to tie for 11th and finish two shots back of the score that qualified for the July national tourney.
