The Sumner County Co-Op hosted the 2019 4-H Chick Chain Show and Auction Thursday, Aug. 1 in Gallatin. Participants showed off their prized pullets at the sale which included about two dozen sets of six Barred Rock and Black Sex Link laying pullets.

The event marks the completion of a 20-week project that began last March in which Sumner County 4-H’ers in grades 4th-6th cared for and raised 24 baby chicks to pullets.

Supreme winners overall were Union Elementary student Alissa Voorhees, grand champion, and home-schooled student Kinley Holl, who was the overall reserve champion.

A grand champion and reserve winner were selected from among the participants in each breed category.

Division Black Sex-Link category winners included Alissa Voorhees, grand champion, and Malak Mannon, reserve champion.

Division winners in the Barred Rock category were Kinley Holl, grand champion, and Natalie Pearson, reserve champion.

Winners in the Rooster category were Malak Mannon, grand champion, and Aryonna Sorg, reserve champion.

Following the judging contest, the birds were auctioned to the highest bidder. Proceeds from the sale are used to finance the project the following year.
