Merrol Hyde Magnet School sent both of their academic teams to the NAQT national competition in Atlanta where 336 teams faced off for two days of competition. Both teams played 10 preliminary rounds of 20-24 questions with bonuses. The A Team of Adam Alvis, Owen Flanagan, Alex Ponce (Captain) and Ethan Jilek made it to the playoff rounds. This is the 4th year that MHMS has made it to the playoffs, but the first year to qualify two teams for nationals. The B Team of Galen Wei, Will Doyle, Mac McIllwain (captain) and Will Houston competed well at their first national high school tournament facing teams from around the country. Owen Flanagan, a sophomore on the A Team received a Sophomore Rising Star award for his individual points. The team is coached by Kim Ponce, who is very proud of her team’s performances. MHMS finished 1st and 2nd place at the Sumner County Championship tournament in February. The A Team also won the Tennessee State Championship sponsored by TACA -Tennessee Academic Coaches Association.
