Pam Hemmer, DAR volunteer, at the Sumner County Archives. SUBMITTED

Members of General Jethro Sumner Chapter, DAR, have begun another preservation project for Sumner County Archives that includes cleaning old documents such as wills and probates, and criminal proceedings, and preparing them for scanning as a resource for interested citizens.

The volunteers wear masks while working at the archives that protect them from the coal dust still collected on these documents. Some volunteers also choose to wear gloves for additional protection from the black dust. After brushing the documents with special sponges, volunteers also remove any metal items from documents, such as paper clips or staples.
