TriStar Hendersonville Medical Center announced Dr. Keith Campbell, MD, has accepted the role of chief medical officer for the hospital, effective March 2. He replaces Dr. Chris Wells, MD, who served as chief medical officer from 2018 until his retirement in December 2021.

“Dr. Campbell will be a great asset to our leadership team, and we look forward to working with him to ensure our hospital continues to lead in clinical and quality improvement initiatives,” said TriStar Hendersonville Chief Executive Officer Justin Coury.

As chief medical officer, Campbell will facilitate the analysis of quality performance, prioritize improvement opportunities and work to reduce practice variation by implementing best practices across the hospital. He plans to partner and collaborate with the medical staff and administration to facilitate teamwork and shared goals to achieve world class performance and outstanding clinical outcomes.

Campbell joins TriStar Hendersonville from HCA Healthcare’s Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center and Sunrise Children’s Hospital in Las Vegas, Nev., where he served as associate chief medical officer for the last year.

In that role, he was instrumental in leading an initiative that decreased the facility’s average length of stay by greater than 20 percent, developed and oversaw the implementation of new sepsis protocols and workflows that cut sepsis mortality by 40 percent and led the implementation of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery protocols, among other successes.

Prior to his work at Sunrise, Campbell was medical director of Informatics at Tenet Healthcare, based in Dallas, Texas. He provided leadership and direction to information technology efforts in supporting medical and physician quality practice and efficiency through the enablement and adoption of clinical systems and informatics.

Campbell has more than 25 years of experience in the medical field. He practiced in general, vascular and trauma surgery from 2002 to 2004 in Kingsport, Tenn., and general and vascular surgery from 2004 to 2010 in Knoxville, Tenn.

He received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Memphis, completed a residency in general surgery at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, Knoxville, and a fellowship in thoracic surgery at the University of Missouri Clinics and Hospitals, Columbia, Mo.
