Global retailer Gap Inc. celebrated a $41.7 million expansion of its online fulfillment capabilities at its Gallatin campus with a ribbon cutting Monday.

The company announced the new technology upgrades earlier this year and said it plans to add 500 additional full-time jobs as a result of the project.

“This campus represents one of Gap’s largest distribution centers in North America,” Campus Leader Kevin Releford told employees along with city and state leaders Monday. “Our campus is a key strategic location for growth and opportunity, so you can understand why it has been important for us to expand and invest in our operations here.”

The online distribution center will be used to fulfill orders from across the county and region for Banana Republic, Old Navy and Athleta. The facility is part of Gap’s larger 2.85 million-square-foot Gallatin campus next to Volunteer State Community College, which employs more than 1,800 people.

Statewide, expansions accounted for 70 percent of the 21,000 new jobs that were created in 2016, according to Bob Rolfe, commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development.

“That tells us we’re doing something right and companies that come to Tennessee thrive in Tennessee,” Rolfe said.

Last year, Gap announced a $3.1 million investment into its Gallatin facility in order to meet the growing demand of online sales.

The retailer offers clothing, accessories and personal care products under the Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy, Athleta, Intermix and Weddington Way brands in more than 90 countries through 3,200 company-owned stores, approximately 450 franchise stores and e-commerce sites.
