Unforgotten Sacrifice

Local fallen police officers were remembered last week during the annual Sumner County Sheriff’s Office Law Enforcement Memorial Service.

The service, held during Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15, included a 21-gun salute, playing of taps and music from Westmoreland High School’s Select Choir.

“Each year we meet here to honor our men whose names appear on the wall outside and celebrate their lives,” Sumner County Sheriff Sonny Weatherford told the crowd of approximately 100 people last week. “Whether you knew them or not, they made an impact on our community.

“It is incumbent upon the sheriff’s office and our nationwide network of brothers and sisters in law enforcement to never let the memories and accomplishments of our fallen officers go unrecalled.”

The service is held each year during National Police Week, which was established by Congress in 1962 to recognize officers who have died while in the service and protection of others.

Fallen Sumner County law enforcement officers include:

  • Deputy Brian Denning, Sumner County Sheriff’s Office (Dec. 8, 2008)
  • Officer Danny MacClary, Hendersonville Police Department (Sept. 27, 2000)
  • Det. Lynn Hicks, Goodlettsville Police Department (May 22, 1999)
  • Sgt. Jody Sadek, Hendersonville Police Department (Sept. 20, 1988)
  • Det. David Mandrell, Sumner County Sheriff’s Office (June 28, 1988)
  • Sgt. Steve Downing, Gallatin Police Department (April 12, 1985)
  • Sgt. Richard Bandy, Hendersonville Police Department (Jan. 19, 1980)
  • Officer James Gammons, Hendersonville Police Department (July 13, 1974)
  • Deputy Ulysses S. Brent, Sumner County Sheriff’s Office (May 9, 1930)

Since 1971, there have been at least 23,726 deaths that occurred in the line of duty across America, according to the national Officer Down Memorial Page. Of those, 635 were in Tennessee.

“Today, we as a grateful nation, state and local community, gather to honor and simply say thank you for all of those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice,” guest speaker Col. Dereck Stewart with the Tennessee Highway Patrol said. “Because of your sacrifice, our local community have order and not chaos. We make a pledge that your courage and your sacrifice will never be forgotten.”
