Viola "Vi" Ruth Crowder

Viola "Vi" Ruth Crowder,  87, of Hendersonville, TN, passed away on June 22, 2020.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and a friend to everyone she knew.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Howell Crowder; parents, Thomas L. Overton and Helen Overton; and by her brother, Thomas L. Overton, III.

She is survived by her children, Kim (Willie) Acevedo, Kyla (James) Rivera; Kay (Frank) DeGrood; Kathy (Jack) Merlin; and Kenneth (Alisha) Mora.  Her pride and joy were her 9 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Vi purchased Clairmont Daycare Center in 1978 and, over the years, became "Ms. Vi" to half of the children in Hendersonville.  She had a swimming pool where she taught swim lessons and where Clairmont students enjoyed spending their summers.  Her Clairmont legacy lives on today.

She raised Holland Lop rabbits and received an induction into the Holland Lop Hall of Fame for her contributions in the field.  For many years, Vi and Howell hosted a huge get together for exhibitors at their home on Labor Day weekend. A delight of this gathering was the Cajun cooking and pecan pralines.

Vi also worked for many years with her church's youth group.  In her sixties she drove to Mexico repeatedly with a 15-passenger van, loaded with teens.  They built homes and shared Jesus with the families there.  She will be remembered for her passion for missions and her love of youth.  Her desire to share Jesus with young people is now evident all over the country.

Vi also had a love for gardening and bird watching.  She had an award-winning backyard filled with ponds, waterfalls, and gardens.  She enjoyed sharing her beautiful gardens with her family and friends.

She was a greeter at her home church, GodWhy.  It was her pleasure and ministry to hug those who entered.

Most recently Vi lived at Park Place Retirement Community in Hendersonville.  She loved all of her friends there and ministered to them whenever she could.  She continued to be active in gardening and Bible studies with her precious friends there.

Vi would want to be most remembered for her love of sharing Jesus.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to her favorite missions organization, Mission Discovery at

A Celebration of Life service will be held at GodWhy Church in Hendersonville on Sunday, June 28.  Family visitation is set for 2:00 p.m. with the service following at 3:00 p.m.

“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust."  Surely he will save you from the fowler's snare and from the deadly pestilence.  He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings, you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.”  Psalm 91:1-4
