This year, my colleagues and I will continue to look for new ways we can recognize and honor our heroic veterans who have so proudly served our state and this great nation. Their dedicated service and incredible sacrifices have provided the many opportunities and freedoms afforded to us as part of our daily lives.

To build upon our commitment to our veterans, I have introduced House Bill 1620 this year to recognize more of these remarkable individuals — including our World War II veterans — for their service. This measure simplifies the application process for our honorably discharged veterans who desire to obtain their license or photo identification card with a special “veteran” designation on it by creating additional form options for them.

In addition to the currently accepted Department of Defense (DD) Form 214, House Bill 1620 allows our honorably discharged veterans to use their Army General Orders (AGO) Form 53-55 or Navy Personnel (NAVPERS) 553 Form to verify service dates with our Department of Safety when they attempt to obtain their license or ID with this special designation.

House Bill 1620 is another small way we can recognize and thank these distinguished heroes who may not have access to their DD 214 Form and who wish to be recognized for their selfless service to Tennessee and our nation. Their bravery, honor, and dignity with which they have performed their duties deserves our respect and admiration.

I am honored to support our veterans, and I will continue to fight for them to ensure they are never forgotten. These brave men and women are the reasons we live in the greatest state and nation this world has ever seen, and we are eternally grateful to them. God bless our veterans, their families and this great state.
