To the editor:

Observing the angst surrounding our immigration situation, I cannot help thinking how unnecessary this is. Laws pertaining to immigration and border security have received bipartisan passage by both houses of Congress for decades. Why have legislators refused to enforce the laws they swore to uphold? Could it be cheap labor and cheap votes?

Contributions from special interests and lobbyists are obviously more important than upholding the law. These actions (or inactions) are leaving well-intentioned and law-abiding immigrants in a political morass. Apparently, these politicians’ own political aggrandizement takes priority. Not only do immigrants and taxpayers suffer, but our social services are being stretched to the limit. Many of our schools are inundated with students who speak no English and staffed by teachers who don’t speak foreign languages. Who suffers? All children-immigrants and our own children are suffering. So much for Washington’s concern for our youth.

Extra costs for health care and welfare have to be paid by taxpayers. In essence, taxpayers are rewarding a self-serving, greedy, power hungry, Beltway cabal for our misery. Of course, this makes no sense and makes me wonder if our society is this stupid and gullible. Judging from the number of reelected incumbents, the answer is a resounding “Yes we are.” My conclusion- – and prayer- – is GOD have mercy on our children and grandchildren.
