Nine Sumner County athletes have earned berths in the TSSAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament which begins Thursday in Franklin.

Beech and Hendersonville participated in the Region 6-AAA meet at Rossview High School while Pope John Paul II competed in the DII-AA Regional at Christina Brothers. 

Beech will send the most athletes, seven, including region champions Trey Bates (120) and Mason Smith (152). 

Bates (58-6) will wrestle Parker Sams from David Crockett. 

Other Buccaneer qualifiers include: Ben Scalera (195), Blake Palmer (106), Coen Myers (113), Donavon Rich (170), and Cordell Griggs (126).

Smith (15-1) will wrestle Ethan McWilliams in round one while Ben Scalera (20-9) takes on Connor Milhorn of Siegel. 

Blake Palmer (41-6) will wrestle Isaac Carperenter from Heritage and Coen Myers (14-11) will wrestle Anthony Berg of Clinton. 

Donovan Rich will take on Jakob Oxford from Independence and Cordell Griggs will wrestle Wemauwaumun Moktani of Munford.

“There is a lot of pressure on these wrestlers but it’s like I tell them, ‘pressure is a privaledge’,” Beech coach Jeff Roberts said. “You must be good to have pressure and they have earned the right to have that.”

Hendersonville’s Justin Mumaw (48-12) at 145 pounds, will wrestleGabrriel Geiser of White Station. Mumaw finished third in the region tournament and will be the only Commando to make the trip to Franklin. 

“This year we expect him to place,” Hendersonville coach Ralph Gabriel said. “I think he is ready. He has been focused all year and been wrestling hard.”

Parker Sutton of JPII placed third in his region tournament and will represent the Knights in Franklin on Thursday. 

The event will take place at the Williamson County Agricultural Exposition Center with ticket costs running $10 for school-age children and older and are good for one-day admission only. Parking is $5 per vehicle per day.
