HENDERSONVILLE - The preseason is all about getting better from week to week.

The Beech Buccaneers accomplished that goal this week taking down Smyrna 14-7 after falling to Brentwood in their first scrimmage.

“I think we made strides tonight,” Beech head coach Anthony Crabtree said. “We watched film for three days and then had two really good practices; physical ones. I think we got better but now it is about what we do moving forward; we cannot regress. We will watch this film, see the mistakes we made and try to keep improving from there.”

After giving up a long touchdown run to end the first quarter, the Beech offense and defense did a much better job of controlling the line of scrimmage.

“I thought we gave good physical effort and did a better job with our mental effort,” Crabtree said. “We did a better job of knowing who to block on offense and did a better job of fitting the run on defense.”

Trailing 7-0, senior running back Ja’Sean Parks burst through the line and made a few really nice cut backs on his way to a 50 yard touchdown to bring the Bucs to within one. Beech missed the tying extra point leaving the score at 7-6 with 10:21 remaining in the game.

Exchanging punts over the next four minutes, Beech claimed the lead on a Patrick Hill touchdown run as well as the two-point conversion giving the Bucs a lead they would not relinquish.

“I think we need to continue to get better a the fundamentals on both sides of the football,” Crabtree said. “Whether that is tackling, blocking, shedding blocks, we must continue to get better. I thought we made improvements from last week but we still have a long ways to go.”

Beech will close out their preseason at Mt. Juliet on August 17 at 8 p.m.
