Lady Knights take down Beech

HENDERSONVILLE – The Lady Knights volleyball team improved to 16-5 on the season Monday night with a 3-1 win (18-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-22) over the visiting Beech Lady Buccaneers.

“Beech has a lot of really good players that put the ball away very well and serve very well,” JPII head coach Kim Shaver said. “In the first set they did a really good job of that, and so I think the biggest thing in the remaining sets that we won was we shifted and our serve receive was able to handle the ball a little better. We never felt comfortable and really had to fight for every point.

“We have a ton of respect for Beech and their program,” Shaver continued. “Coach Carlson coaches Team Alliance during club season, and so we have built friendships with them over the years. We are working hard to rebuild things here at JPII.”

The Lady Knights are building positive momentum in their program after big wins over Ensworth last week, and a 7-0 tournament at the Bobcat classic that saw the team bring home the championship.

“I think that win Saturday night really helped give us confidence to finish matches like this,” Shaver added. “Like Saturday night, we really had to stay focused on each point.”

At 16-5 overall, the Lady Knights need just 11 more wins to tie the 27 win team in 2015, which is the most wins in school history.

“I think from the start of the team year where we have improved the most is that there are a multitude of girls that can score a point for us,” she said. “We’ve got kids that have worked hard to have a lot of options for their shots. In doing that I think it takes the pressure off the kids because everyone knows we have multiple girls that can score for us. Defensively I think our girls are seeing the court better. They are doing a much better job of covering the back line, and that comes with multiple years of playing varsity.”
