Station Camp falls one win shy of Spring Fling

Bison set new school record with 29 wins

GALLATIN – It has been one heck of a ride for the Station Camp Bison baseball team in 2019.

Unfortunately, that ride reached its end Friday night as Station Camp fell 1-0 to visiting Independence in the Class AAA state sectional game, ending the year at 29-12.

Despite the loss, the Bison hold their heads high knowing they won a program-best 29 games, their first-ever District 9AAA tournament championship as well as a first-ever Region 5AAA tournament championship.

Even though Friday night was a tough pill to swallow for those that wear the maroon and white, they walk off the fields with their heads held high knowing they have set a new standard for Bison baseball.

“I’ll remember these seniors because the way they started the culture,” Station Camp coach Korey Heppeard said. “They have changed this program to what we want it to be, and I’ll always be thankful for them. They are successful, they play the game the right way, respect the game and do things to right way.”

The Bison recorded just three hits against Vanderbilt commit Robert Hassell as the Eagles hurler struck out 15 batters in seven innings.

“He threw it well tonight,” Heppeard added. “But we had our opportunities. In a game like this at this state of the year, one run is enough to end it. We made a few mistakes on 0-2 pitches that game, but we had opportunities with guys on second base but just couldn’t get that hit. That is baseball at this level. He threw it really well tonight, he is going to be really good.”

While this loss will always sting for the seniors, and no more than it does right now, Heppeard says when the time is right, he knows the players will join him in appreciating all that they have accomplished in 2019.

“I’m already there, but I know the seniors hurt and I hurt for them,” he added. “It really hurts that we were just one run away but we have to appreciate what we have done. If you don’t appreciate what you have done right now in the moment it can slip away from you. We did and accomplished a lot of good things this season.”

The Bison say goodbye to eight seniors, Casey Eldridge, Zach Boze, Bill Mouchette, Zane Stewart, Cooper Jackson, Logan Smith, Brady Harris and Kalen Puckett.

Heppeard says 2020 can be just as good of a season if the Bison work hard this offseason and come ready to play next year.

“I think we can duplicate this success because of what we have in the youth of our pitching,” he said. “That said we will have to work at the plate and defensively in the field but it is there we just have to have the guys that are willing to put in the work like these seniors did.”
