Spring Fling produced a number of captivating moments to close the 2021-22 high school sports season. Main Street Preps will rewind the best from last week in baseball, softball, tennis, and track and field.

Today we’ll relive the TSSAA tennis championships’ top moments, listed alphabetically.

Brentwood girls reclaim Class AAA throne: After a run of four consecutive team state championships, Brentwood did not advance to last year’s Spring Fling. The Bruins had a glorious return in 2022 with a dominant 4-0 victory over Tennessee High in the finals, buoyed by four underclassmen (freshman Disha Javagal, freshman Nisha Javagal, sophomore Emsley Meier and freshman Joelle Krikorian) and one senior, (Holly Cochrane). The title will likely go through Brentwood again next year.

Franklin’s Messiers give program first title: The Messier name is famous in the hockey world. Lisa Messier (senior) and Sofia Messier (sophomore) are giving the name some clout in Franklin. They raced to last week’s Class AA girls doubles finals and held off a comeback attempt from Tennessee High, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, to clinch Franklin’s first tennis championship.

Hank Trondson assumes favorite role in DII-AA boys singles: Last year’s state runner-up, Ensworth junior Hank Trondson has emerged as the one to beat moving forward. He did not lose a single set during his run to the Division II-AA boys singles championship.

Merrol Hyde boys add three championships to trophy case: It could not have been a more productive week for the Hawks. They captured their second consecutive team title in dominant form, sweeping Chattanooga Arts and Sciences and Gatlinburg-Pittman 4-0 in each meeting. That carried over to the other championships, where sophomore Tobias Mandeville won three matches without losing a set to win the singles title. Sophomore Eric Popa and senior Grant Koch did the same, running to the doubles title by winning every set.

Summertown girls retain championship, repeat in doubles: Summertown’s run of success after its 2019 team championship hit a snag in 2020 when the season was called off by the pandemic. Then last year, the Lady Eagles came up just short of the Class A title. Last week was more joyous with Summertown sweeping Union City 4-0 for the team championship. For good measure, the Lady Eagles claimed the doubles title for the third year in a row, as Ella Konig and Gracie Kelly ended their run together with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 win over Madison Magnet in the finals.
