A 23-year-old woman from Indiana lost her life in a boating accident on Old Hickory Lake on Sunday.
Madison Renee Shipley fell from a pontoon boat in a cove off of Cedarwood Drive in Drakes Creek at around 3:30 p.m., according to Hendersonville Fire Chief Scotty Bush.
Bush added that the woman appeared to have subsequently hit her head and drowned.
Members of the Hendersonville Fire Department Dive Team recovered Shipley’s body at around 9:30 p.m. on Sunday not far from where the accident occurred, Bush said.
According to her obituary, Shipley turned 23 just a day earlier. A native of Warsaw, Indiana, she graduated with honors in 2020 from Ball State University's School of Nursing with plans to eventually pursue a career in pediatric nursing.
She had recently moved to Nashville where she was to start working as a nurse at Saint Thomas Midtown Hospital in October.
Shipley's death was one of two boating-related fatalities over the Labor Day weekend in the state, according to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. The other incident occurred Saturday in Watts Bar Lake.
There have been 24 boating fatalities in Tennessee in 2020, according to the agency.
